CALGARY, AB: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation applauds the United Conservative Party’s commitment to recall legislation and encourages all other parties to include MLA recall in their platforms.
“Recall legislation upholds the correct notion that citizens should be able to hold politicians accountable at all times, not just once every four years,” said Franco Terrazzano, Alberta Director for the CTF. “We applaud the UCP for their commitment to MLA recall and urge all parties to include this promise in their election platforms.”
On February 14, The UCP committed to introducing recall legislation if elected this spring.
“Albertans want their MLAs to be accountable to them. That’s why a United Conservative government will introduce a Recall Act allowing voters to fire their MLA in between elections if they have lost the public’s trust,” stated UCP leader Jason Kenney.
This commitment follows many years of the CTF calling for Alberta parties to introduce recall legislation. Most recently, the CTF issued a news release calling for MLA recall on January 9, 2019, and published a column in the Calgary Sun (January 17) on the merits of this legislation.
“Politicians who strive to do right by their constituents should support this type of law,” said Terrazzano “Alberta needs politicians that are willing to reaffirm the role of the citizen as the boss.”
